God's Promise
Monday evening we were talking with our #VirtuousCowgirls and we got into the topic of God's glory being evident before men on the earth (Romans 1:20) and started talking about the meaning behind the rainbow. I knew I just had to share it with all of you as well.
God's glory is the revealing of His character. After reading John, Isaiah, and Ezekiel's accounts of their visions in the heavenly throne room, I began looking at the similarities they list and comparing them to what we see everyday, things that cost us absolutely nothing. The one that strikes me the most is the rainbow. John 4:3 says that the One that sits on the throne is encircled by a rainbow. The One who sits on that throne is God, God the Father, the Lord and Master of all.
What is the significance of the rainbow? Genesis 9:16 tells us it is a symbol of His covenant with the earth. What is that covenant? A covenant is a promise, and God's promise is to never destroy the whole earth by flood again (Genesis 9:11). Why does this matter to us now? Because the sign, symbol, or mark of this promise is the rainbow in the sky. Whenever we see a rainbow we should be reminded that God keeps His promises.
So now for some rainbow facts:
There is aways a rainbow present at all times on the earth
The rainbow is made up of 7 colors, God's number for perfection and completeness
Within those 7 colors visible to the naked eye, there are so many colors that we are not able to identify all of them. A sign of God's infinity
A rainbow is not just a half circle. Rainbows are acutally full circles
Now, let's put all of this information together. God is sitting on the throne, ruling over all creation. Ezekiel describes as His glory being so brilliant that it had the appearance of a rainbow around Him (Ezekiel 1:28). So as God is ruling, He is surrounded by His promise. Not just the promise to never flood the earth again, but all of His promises, so we can trust Him.
So next time you see a rainbow, or even this time of year, a sun dog, remember these passages and rest, knowing you can trust His promises.
