How to Overcome
Have you ever heard the phrase, "God will never give your more than you can handle?" That idea is nowhere in the Bible. Many times, people look at 1 Corinthains 10:13 and say that verse supports the phrase, but it does not. 1 Corinthians is saying that you will not be tempted beyond what is common to man, it says nothing about the trials we face in the life. Try telling Job, Joseph, or Horatio Spafford that "God will never give you more than you can handle." You may very well be run off. Don't believe me? See the Lord's response to Job's friends in Job 42:7-9. Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps his mouth shut. (Proverbs 17:28)
But look at what this #CornerstoneVerseOfTheDay is saying; it's saying that when we feel overwhelmed, we have a rock, a stronghold, a higher place to go when we are overwhelmed. Jesus told us that we would have trouble in this world, but to take heart because He has overcome this world. (John 16:33) When we feel overwhelmed, like we just can't make it through our current trial. When we feel like we are going to be crushed by the weight of this world we have another promise from our Lord:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Look back on our Putting Aside Fear post, this is why we don't have to carry these burdens alone. We can cast our cares on Him, for He cares for us. He wants to take our burden when we feel overwhelmed. He is always there, waiting, longing to take your troubles and heartache in this world. He will always turn it into something of beauty. (Isaiah 61:1-3)
Have you ever taken in a horse that had lots of fear? Maybe they came from a situation of neglect of care, or were mishandled and abused. We have two horses in our herd currently that each came from one of those situations. Oh how I longed to be able to tell them each that their troubles were over, they will no longer need to worry about when they will get fed or receive a heavy hand. In the same way they Lord longs to take our worries, fears, concerns, and heaviness of this world.
Both of these horses in our herd have made tremendous improvements as we have been giving them good experiences for several years now, but they still regress because they still have memories of when life was not so good. We must be patient with them, understanding that they cannot reason that things are better now, but be patient while they replace their bad memories with good memories.
In the same way the Lord is patient with us as well and always there, walking right beside us. Lean into Him, press into Him. Don't buy into the enemies lie that you are a failure because "God never gives you more than you can handle." It is an out and out lie. The world will never give us more than He can handle. So when you are facing a mountain that looks as if it is going to fall in on you, cry out to the one who can move mountains.
