Proverbs 31:26 Cowgirl Version

The virtuous cowgirl has a character that is marked by integrity. The words that she speaks are no exception. She shoots the breeze with common sense, and never shies from the truth. You can count on what she says to be true and practical.

How do you know what someone is saying is true? You measure it against the source of truth, the Bible. The Bible is the word of God:

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The virtuous cowgirl lives by these words, and she instructs others to do the same. Jesus said:

“What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” Mark 7:20-23

She takes her words very seriously. She means what she says and she says what she means. The Lord Himself puts great weight in words as well. He spoke the entire world into being. He has never once said something and not followed through on His word. We are created in His image and so our words also carry weight. That is why Jesus also said:

"All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one." Matthew 5:37

I will tell you the number one thing that will always get me into trouble is my mouth. I do not always follow the wisdom of James:

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry," James 1:19

To remedy this I pray over my mouth:

Lord, place a guard over my mouth (Psalm 141:3)
Do not let any unwholesome speech depart from my mouth, but only that which is beneficial for those listening. (Ephesians 4:29)
May I always speak with wisdom, and may the law of Your kindness always be on my tongue. (Proverbs 31:26)

Our mouth is our greatest weapon, make sure yours is under control by the Spirit of the Lord. By our words we can build someone up, and tear them down, we can praise the Lord, and curse our neighbor. (James 3:9-10) We must be mindful of the words we say. Another passage I always keep in my mind is this:

Even fools are thought to be wise, when they keep their mouth shut. Proverbs 17:28
