Proverbs 31:31 Cowgirl Version
The virtuous cowgirl lives her life in a way that the world knows she is different from the rest of the world. They recognize that she is holy, set apart, living according to the Lord's command of:
"Be holy, because I am holy." Leviticus 11:45
To be holy means to be set apart, different, not like other things. The Lord Himself is holy, He is set apart. Holy means nothing of perfection (even though the Lord is), but means you set yourself apart. This past Sunday at church a young girl in our congregation gave her testimony that she realized a couple of years ago that to be a Christ follower she was going to have to be different. That her deciding to follow God with all her heart mean that she was going to have to be different. In the end she decided that she was okay with that because the benefits far outweighed the disadvantages.
This is exactly what the virtuous cowgirl understands. She knows that she is different from the world, but she is okay with that and wears it with pride. She is not double-minded, following God in one area, but not another. She does not live according to His ways in one area, but not in another. She has surrendered her entire life to Him and lives like she has. That is what it means to be a follower of Christ.
I describe the Bible as our instruction manual to life. That is basically what it is. In the same way that you read an instruction manual for a new electronic device, or vehicle, or kitchen gadget, we should read the Bible the same way. James tells us:
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:22-25
The virtuous cowgirl reads the Bible, and applies it to her everyday life. she does it when others are looking, and she does it when no one is looking, for she knows that the Lord is omniscient and omnipresent. She understands that it is the Lord who keeps her accountable and not anyone else. That is the life of a follower of Christ.
