“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them." Jonah 2:8
This was part of Jonah's prayer to the Lord inside the belly of the big fish. Romans 1:25 says that the unrighteous exchange the truth of God for a lie. That is what Jonah is talking about here. When we cling to our own ideology, which is an idol, we have exchanged the truth of God for a lie; we are clinging to something worthless and turning away from the Lord.
What are you clinging to? Are you clinging to the Lord and His promises? Or are you clinging to the things of the world which are worthless? Jesus said this about earthly treasures:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
So where is your treasure? Is it in the things of the Lord, or is it in things of this earth?
Consider this with the horse. Does your horse respect, and honor you, following your ways in a humble and submissive way? Or does your horse look to others for their strength and leadership? Does your horse find peace somewhere else; like with their heard, or close to the barn? When your horse looks elsewhere for their leadership, strength, and peace, riding becomes a struggle. Much like our life when we turn away from the Lord and His grace and love. Nothing on this earth compares to what the Lord has to offer us and it will all pass away and disappoint us, but the Lord will remain forever and be with us always (Matthew 28:20, Revelations 22:13).
